Sugar-free Dates & Figs Ladoo | Guest Post by Kalyani Mom Chef & Tupperware Giveaway!

When I started blogging I came across several fellow bloggers who encouraged & supported me. Kalyani from Sizzling Tastebuds is one such person. She used to comment on each & every post of mine, which in turn motivated me to continue. Following my 2nd pregnancy & baby’s birth, I took a break for a year from blogging but when I came back she was one of the few bloggers I started keeping in touch with.

You would find healthy & colorful recipes on her blog. I felt that she would be perfect for celebrating Lemon in Ginger’s start of a beautiful journey. When I asked her to guest post for me on gtalk, she promptly agreed and for a moment I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know she would be happy to be a guest blogger for me. She is a Bangalorean settled in Mumbai and takes you to task for calling her Madrasi :) I loved her bio, I’m sure you would too.

Enough of jibber-jabber from me, now over to Kalyani –

Deepali’s blog – Lemon in Ginger is a wonderful amalgamation of vegetarian delicacies and simple but profound food photography. Her bakes usually entice me quite a bit, as they are eggless and usually easy to make. Her new home in the blogsphere – Lemon in Ginger is a warm place to come home to , where simple home cooked food along with good yummy bakes await you. A new home is like a new beginning, and here’s a small guest post to do exactly that!
I knew Deepali through some of the events on the blogosphere, and was flattered and equally humbled that she asked me to do a guest post. Coming from a vegetarian (often vegan and even saatvic) and egg-free kitchen, I wondered what to make and these little quick to make Dry Fruit Ladoos seemed to be the perfect treat to welcome Deepali into her new abode – her new blog.

This is surely an energy booster, as well as a great source of calcium (from the dates) and fibre and vitamins from the figs (or Anjeer as its known in Hindi).  All you need is an undisturbed 15 – 20 mins and the delicate Ladoos are ready to eat.

Yield: 16-18 small sized or 12 medium sized meatballs

Sugarfree Dates & Figs Ladoos

A healthy & simple snack for kids

  • Dates (pitted) – ¾ cup
  • Dried Figs – ½ cup
  • Chopped Almonds – 2 Tbsp + 1 Tbsp (for garnish)
  • Ghee / Clarified Butter – 2 tsp (split use)
  • Poppy Seeds – ½ tsp

  1. Dry roast the poppy seeds in a hot pan till they start spluttering – remove and cool
  2. Pit the dates and chop them into small bits. Chop the figs also into same sized bits.
  3. Dice the almonds into slivers (you may blanch them and sliver, but with the skin on also works just fine)
  4. At this stage, you may want to slightly pulse the figs and dates together without any water, to a slightly gooey mass. I didn’t pulse it but use them as bits. Pulsing does save a little time
  5. Heat ½ the ghee, and use the rest to grease a plate.
  6. In the pan, add the whole nuts and on a really low flame, keep sautéing them till they melt and come to a mass and starts leaving the sides of the pan – takes about 8-10 minutes with continuous stirring. (If on the other hand, you have pulsed them, this stage takes half the time). But at no point leave the pan attended as the sucrose in the dates will harden / burn and the ladoos become hard. Add the almonds at this stage and mix well.
  7. Once it starts to leave the sides, take off the flame, and transfer to a greased plate. Allow it to cool for 2-3 minutes.
  8. When still warm, grease your palms with ghee and roll them up into ladoos. Roll it in the dry roasted poppy seeds, and top with garnished almonds.
  9. This keeps well for around a week without refrigeration. Pop one for a 4 PM quick snack or even pack into kids’ snack-box for a healthy and hearty treat.
